Chicago IX – Chicago’s Greatest Hits

Today on our Record Roulette adventure, we’re diving into Chicago IX, a compilation album of Chicago’s greatest hits. This album stretches from their 1969 debut album to their sixth studio album released in 1974. Originally, I had picked this album out of pure curiosity of the group’s sound. However, I later found that Chicago is actually coming to town to perform later this summer. Since this is one of my mom’s favorite groups, she eagerly bought two of us tickets to see their show. I guess you could say the universe wanted me to listen to this album. So without further ado, let’s see what Chicago IX has to offer.

Growing up on my parents’ music, my mom’s especially, I automatically recognized the first track, “25 Or 6 To 4.” This led to a great start, as it gave me a sense of familiarity and nostalgia. While listening to the remainder of the album, I found that this group does an excellent job implementing a horn section in a rock format. In tracks such as “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?” and “Just You ‘N’ Me,” the brass plays a prominent role in tying the feel of the music together. In other tracks such as “Wishing You Were Here” and “[I’ve Been] Searchin’ So Long,” we see the group deliver both their instrumentation and vocals with passion.

“Saturday In The Park” is one I consider a standout in the album. It’s a dynamic number, yet it still has an easygoing feel to it. The following track, “Feelin’ Stronger Everyday,” is by far my favorite out of the compilation. Not only is this track made up of complex tempos and key changes, but the groove of the bass line also mixes perfectly with the brass sections. “Beginnings” is the perfect way to end this compilation, as it leaves the listener wanting more from the group.

Overall, I think Chicago IX is a solid Greatest Hits album. The album is filled with tracks that made Chicago one of the most popular and respected groups of the ’70s. Admittedly, however, fans of this group might have these tunes already. Therefore, I think that this album is the perfect gateway for those who are just discovering Chicago, just like myself.
